Simon Norfolk

Inspirational images of Auschwitz

Simon Norfolk is one of my main influences. In his book for most of it I have no words Norfolk photographs the effects of war especially on the landscapes, he documents where humans have left their trace which he states is ‘an essay in applied memory'

Auschwitz: Staircase in a prison block. From For Most Of It I Have No Words: Genocide Landscape Memory © Simon Norfolk, 1998.

This staircase shows decay and memory and once you realise that it is one of many in Auschwitz where thousands of people that have past through, many to the gas chambers that you begin to see the harrowing tale.
